June is National Safety Month. This campaign, put together by the National Safety Council (NSC), highlights initiatives to prevent injuries and fatalities inside and outside the workplace. For each week in June, there is a topic of focus, including employee engagement during the week of June 8.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 5,300 workplace fatalities and 2.6 million job-related injuries were recorded last year.
Furthermore, many of these incidents were preventable.
This week’s safety month focus is Employee Engagement.
Becoming disengaged at work can lead to safety complacency and increased susceptibility to occupational injuries and fatalities. That’s why there is a week in safety month dedicated to employee engagement.
For employees to prioritize workplace safety, they need to be engaged. Here are just a few ways employers can foster increased engagement among their staff:
- Develop interactive training activities
- Schedule regular toolbox talks
- Post plenty of safety signage on-site
- Offer a range of written resources (e.g., workplace safety manuals and flyers)
Additionally, employers should reward employees who demonstrate a commitment to injury prevention.
