In an attempt to minimize the spread of coronavirus, most major insurers, including BCBS of Alabama, are covering coronavirus testing at 100% for now. While out-of-network claims may be processed as in-network, plan participants will likely be subject to balance billing.
Employers with self-insured health plans that charge a copay or coinsurance for medically necessary diagnostic testing, may want to consider whether to cover coronavirus testing at 100%. If so, written approval from the stop loss carrier is necessary to confirm coverage for this change, and the TPA must be notified.
The IRS issued Notice 2020-15 yesterday to allow individuals to maintain HSA eligibility even if their High Deductible Health Plan covers coronavirus testing and treatment at 100% prior to meeting the deductible.
