OSHA’s Lockout Tagout requirement is a multi-step process and covers the servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment in which the unexpected energization could cause injury to employees. It applies to the control of energy during servicing and or maintenance of machines and equipment.

Normal operations are not covered, however servicing and or maintenance which takes place during normal operations is covered if an employee is required to remove or bypass a guard or other safety device or the employee is required to place any part of his or her body into an area of a machine or piece of equipment where work is performed upon the material being processed or where a danger zone exists during a machine’s operating cycle.

Training is required for employees affected by lockout tagout. Whether they are performing lockout tagout or waiting on the servicing, maintenance or repair of the equipment.
